Located in Kotbari, Comilla District, Bangladesh, Bangladesh, Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) is a nationally important institution engaged in rural development, people empowerment, agricultural development and applied social research. Established on 27 May 1959 under the leadership of Dr. Akhtar Hamid Khan, the academy has helped develop innovative approaches to improving the quality of rural life and strengthening local institutions. Today, BARD remains an important destination for researchers, students, development professionals and visitors interested in the social and economic transformation of Bangladesh.
Located about 8-10 kilometers from Comilla city, the academy is spread over a sprawling campus of about 156 acres. Its well-maintained grounds, tree-lined streets, institutional buildings, gardens and agricultural environment create a unique atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the city. However, BARD is primarily a professional training and research institution, not a conventional tourist destination. Visitors should ensure permission before visiting the campus.
The academy is particularly relevant for travelers exploring the history of Bangladesh's development. Its activities are linked to the influential Comilla Model , which included cooperative organizations, agricultural development, local administration, rural infrastructure, and irrigation initiatives. For a comprehensive cultural itinerary, visitors can combine Comilla's archaeological heritage and historical landscapes with a BARD-approved visit.
