Someshwari River

Someshwari River and its beauty should be visited in Durgapur Upazila of Netrakona district. The Someswari River originates from Seemasangri in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya, India and enters Durgapur. Folklore A long time ago, this area was occupied by a man named Someswara Pathak, after whom the river came to be known as Someswari River. Someswari river displays different beauty at different times of the year. Even though the water decreases in winter, the Someshwari river, which is always clear water, regains its youth in the monsoons. Although now known more as a coal mine, the Someswari river has not lost its beauty.

It is best to hire a motorcycle or CNG for a day trip. By renting a motorcycle from in front of Talukdar Plaza in Durgapur, you can cross the Someswari River, visit the Pink Hills, Garo Hills, the blue water lake of the Chinese Clay Hills , Vijaypur BGB Camp, Ranikhong Church, etc. Besides, you can see some pillars made for the training of liberation war in 1971 on the border of India and Bangladesh.

Sarkar and Jinnat Paribahan buses leave directly from Dhaka's Mohakhali Bus Terminal for Durgapur. It takes 250 to 350 taka to go to Durgapur by these two buses. Although it is called Durgapur, usually these buses go to Sukhnagari. From Sukhnagari, one has to cross a small river by boat and go to Durgapur by rickshaw, bus or motorbike. You can go to Durgapur for Tk 20 by bus, Tk 80 to Tk 100 by rickshaw and Tk 100 for two people on a motorcycle.

From Dhaka, take Haor Express at 10:15 PM and Mohanganj Express at 01:15 PM, get off at Shyamganj train station and from there take a bus or CNG to Birishiri Bazar. Or if you want to go a bit easier, you can come back to Netrakona by Howar Express/Mohanganj Express train and return from Challisha Bazar by motorcycle for Tk 300 per person. Apart from this, you can take the train from Airport Railway Station at 4.00/4.30 am to Zaria station for 80 to 100 taka from Zaria and go to Durgapur by trawler, auto, CNG or motorcycle.

Besides, you can go to Durgpur by motorcycle or CNG from any part of the country to Netrakona district headquarters. A motorbike for two will cost 350-400 taka to go to Durgapur.

To return from Durgapur to Dhaka, two night coaches depart for Dhaka's Mohakhali at 11:00 PM and 11:30 AM from in front of Talukdar Plaza, Durgapur. Besides, a train leaves for Dhaka from Jaria train station at 12 noon.

Durgapur has several fine dining hotels, of which the Nirala Hotel is quite popular. Besides, there are several other food hotels in the vicinity but it is better to avoid heavy food in them. If you are very hungry, you can quench your hunger with eggs and parota. Of course, don't miss out on tasting Netrakona's famous Balish Sweets from Durgapur Bazaar. Apart from this, Birishiri Bazar also has good quality food hotels.
