Goaldi Mosque

Goaldi Mosque is a historic Sultanate building built in Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj District. Built during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Hussain Shah in Gowaldi village of Sonargaon Municipality, Gowaldi Mosque is an attractive place for tourists. During the reign of Alauddin Hossain Shah, Bengal achieved great excellence in art, education and literature. According to historical information, Mullah Hijabar Akbar Khan built the traditional Gwaldi Mosque in 1519.

Similar to other historical buildings of Pandua, Gaur and Bangladesh in ancient India, Gwaldi Mosque has Arabic decorations on brickwork on the exterior and interior walls. There is a dome on the roof of the mosque and four towers in the Sultanate style at the four corners. The Gwaldi Mosque has an area of ​​7.92 meters and the surrounding walls are 1.61 meters thick. There are 5 arched entrances inside the mosque. And directly at the main entrance is the central arch made of black stone. The remaining 2 of the 3 arches are made of brick.

The terracotta design of the Goaldi mosque bears many similarities to the stonework of Sultan Ghiyas uddin Shah's mausoleum at Sonargaon. The thick brick surface of the mosque is fully decorated with various designs carved in terracotta, which gives this Gwaldi mosque a special uniqueness. Since 1975, Bangladesh Directorate of Archeology has been supervising the maintenance and overall affairs of this historic mosque.

Historic Panam Nagar , Folk & Crafts Museum and Goaldi Masjid are in close proximity so it would be wise to visit these 3 places together on a trip to Sonargaon. A ticket to enter Panam Nagar is Tk 20 and to enter the museum Tk 30 per person. The museum is closed every Wednesday and Thursday.

From Dhaka's Gulistan, you can take an AC bus from Doyle, Swadesh or Borak to Mograpara intersection and take a battery-powered auto or rickshaw to Panam City for a fare of Tk 10 to Tk 30. Bus fare from Gulistan to Mograpara intersection will cost 50 to 70 taka per person.

Folk and Crafts Museum is just 1 km from Panam City, which is easily accessible on foot. And you can go to Gwaldi Mosque with a rickshaw fare of only 15 to 20 taka from Folk and Crafts Museum.

As the capital is close to Dhaka city, one can travel to Sonargaon and return to Dhaka in one day, so there is no need to spend the night in Sonargaon, but for special needs, there is a post office bungalow of the Zilla Parishad in the Sonargaon Upazila Parishad complex, where you can stay overnight. Apart from this, you will find several residential hotels and restaurants near Sonargaon's Mograpara intersection and Museum No. 1 Gate for overnight stay and food.
