Chandrima Udyan (Chandrima Uddan) is located next to the Crescent Lake adjacent to Sangsad Bhavan, the heart of Dhaka city. There are different opinions about the naming of Chandrima Udyan. Some think there was a house here, whose owner was named Chandrima. According to some, former President HM Ershad named it Chandrima Udyan after the crescent-shaped crescent lake.
Before 1981, this Chandrima Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar was used for cultivation and cattle ranches. Later in 1981, the late President Ziaur Rahman was buried here and the area was made a tourist spot. With the change of power of the party forming the government of Bangladesh, the name of this park has been changed repeatedly from Chandrima Udyan to Zia Udyan and again from Zia Udyan to Chandrima Udyan. Today the place is equally known by both these names.
Spread over an area of about 74 acres, Chandrima Udyan has the late President Ziaur Rahman's tomb complex, canteen, suspension bridge, memorial hall and mosque. Besides, the suspension bridge and fountains over the Crescent Lake located near the park attract visitors. Chandrima Udyan is bustling with visitors throughout the year. And on special days, people of all ages flock to Chandrima Udyan to spend time with their loved ones.
