Bongo Sonahat Bridge Kurigram

Bongo Sonahat Bridge is a historical bridge located on Dudhkumar River in Banga Sonahat Union of Bhurungamari Upazila of Kurigram District. Banga Sonahat Railway Bridge, about 1,200 feet long, was built over the Dudhkumar River in Bhurungamari in 1887 AD as part of the construction of a railway to facilitate the movement of British troops and supplies from Lalmonirhat in Bangladesh to the Indian state of Manipur. During the liberation war in 1971, the freedom fighters demolished a part of this bridge to disrupt the communication of Pakistani soldiers. After the war, the bridge was renovated and used as a normal bridge.

Many wanderlust visitors come here for picnics during winters. 1 km west of Banga Sonahat Bridge is Pateshwari Bazaar, which was once very bustling. Just a few kilometers away from Pateshwari Bazar is an ancient mosque built by Mirjumla. And this historic mosque was built in 1660.

Kurigram can be reached by buses like Nabil, Haque Special, Hanif, Tanjila and Ena from Asadgate, Kalyanpur and Gabtali in the capital Dhaka. The fare will be Tk 950 to 1400 depending on the bus. Again you can go to Kurigram by taking Rangpur Express or Kurigram Express train from Kamalapur railway station. The ticket price of these trains is Tk 640-2,197 depending on the class. You can reach Bhurungamari by bus from Kurigram city and from there you can take an autorickshaw, a rickshaw or a bus bound for Motherganj to visit Bang Sonahat Bridge.

There is no good overnight accommodation in Bhurungamari. However, there are few residential hotels in Nageshwari Upazila. Besides, you will find different quality residential hotels in Kurigram district town.

The food at Nanna Biryani or Asia Hotel located at Shapla Mor in Kurigram is quite popular. Sidal Bharta and Bairati fish from the Teesta river are famous dishes of Kurigram.

Chilmari Port, Munsibari of Ulipur, Chandamari Mosque etc. are notable among other places of interest around Banga Sonahat Bridge.
