Bhawal Raj Shamshanswari located in Joydevpur of Gazipur district is a significant archaeological site of Bangladesh. For the purpose of cremation of the members of the zamindar family, this mausoleum named Bhawal Raj Shmshaneshwari was established on the south bank of Chilai River, just 1 km away from Bhawal Rajbari. There are name plaques and monuments in the name of deceased family members and there is also a 6-pillared Shiva temple built in the Mughal architectural style in the cremation grounds.
According to various historical sources, the ancestors of the Bhawal zamindars lived in the village of Bajrayogini in Munshiganj district. In the forties of the 18th century, Balram Roy worked as a Dewan of Daulat Gazi, the zamindar of Bhawal Pargana of Gazipur at that time. Later Balram Roy bought Daulat Gazi's zamindari at auction. After Balaram Roy's death in 1743, his son Krishna Roy began managing the zamindari and the Bhawal zamindari became permanent. After Krishna Roy's death in 1750, his son Jaydev Roy Bhawal took charge of the zamindari. Bhawal area came to be known as Joydevpur after Zamindar Jaydev Roy.
In 1856, Kali Narayan Roy inherited the zamindari. The British government awarded him the title of Roy Chowdhury and Raja for managing the zamindari. Bhawal Rajbari and Bhawal Raj Shamshaneshwari were built during the reign of Kali Narayan. It is said that famous Indian architect Kamakshya Roy designed this crematorium.
