The Forbidden City is located in the heart of Beijing, just north of Tiananmen and almost south of Jingshan Park. International tourists from Bangladesh usually arrive in Beijing by plane and then use the city's well-maintained subway network, airport rail service, buses, taxis, or privately organized transportation.
Step 1: Travel from Dhaka to Beijing by air
Book a flight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) in Dhaka to Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) or Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX). Both airports serve the Chinese capital, although they are located in different parts of the metropolitan area.
Air China operates direct flights between Dhaka and Beijing Capital International Airport, while China Southern operates direct flights between Dhaka and Beijing Daxing International Airport. Direct flights typically take five to five and a half hours. The number of flights, days of operation, and schedules are subject to change, so be sure to check the exact service available for your travel dates.
There may also be connecting flights via regional airports such as Guangzhou, Kunming, Hong Kong, Bangkok or Singapore. Depending on the connections and waiting times, the total travel time can be significantly longer than a non-stop flight.
Estimated Air Travel Budget: Economy class return fares can range from approximately $350-$800 or more, depending on travel dates, airline, seat availability, baggage, and booking terms. These are estimates for planning purposes, not guaranteed fares. Compare current prices directly with the airline or reliable flight-booking providers.
Visa Preparation: Bangladeshi passport holders should check the exact requirements for a Chinese visa with the Chinese Embassy or an authorized Chinese visa application service before traveling. Tourist visa eligibility, required documents, and entry policies should not be assumed simply because a flight ticket has been obtained.
Step 2: From Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK)
- Airport Express and Subway: Follow the airport signs to take the Capital Airport Express, head towards the central subway network, and change trains as needed to reach Subway Line 1. Get off at Tiananmen East or Tiananmen West Station, then walk through the authorized security checkpoint and towards the Meridian Gate.
- Estimated cost of airport rail: around 25 yuan for the Capital Airport Express, and around 3-6 yuan for additional city subway rides, depending on the route.
- Taxi or ride-hailing: Depending on the departure terminal, route, traffic, tolls, and time of day, it can cost approximately 100–180 yuan or more to get to the center of Beijing.
- Journey time: Depending on the situation, it takes about 60-90 minutes by train, including train changes, or about 45-90 minutes by road.
Step 3: From Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX)
- Daxing Airport Express: Take the Airport Express service to Kaoqiao, then connect to central Beijing and Line 1 via the Beijing Subway system.
- Estimated rail costs: The standard Airport Express fare from Daxing Airport to Caoqiao is usually around 35 yuan, plus an additional local subway fare of 3-7 yuan.
- Taxi or private transportation: Depending on traffic, vehicle type, tolls, and where exactly you get off, it can cost approximately 180–300 yuan or more to get to the city center of Beijing.
- Journey time: The train journey (including transfers) takes approximately 75-110 minutes, or approximately 60-100 minutes by road.
Airport fares and travel times are estimates only. Please check current fares and operating hours when planning your arrival, especially for late-night flights.
Step 4: From central Beijing and the city center
By subway: Beijing Subway Line 1 is one of the most convenient ways. Arrive at Tiananmen East or Tiananmen West Station and follow the designated pedestrian and security measures towards the South Meridian Gate entrance of the palace. It may take about 15-25 minutes or more to walk from the station area to the museum entrance, especially when the checkpoint queue is busy.
If starting from Qianmen, visitors can use subway Line 2 or Line 8 to reach Qianmen Station, then proceed north along the appropriate authorized pedestrian walkway. If starting from Beijing Railway Station, passengers can connect to Line 1 via the subway network. From Beijing South Railway Station, the central Tiananmen area can be reached using the city's subway system or by taxi.
Local subway fares: Depending on the distance, most short-distance subway rides in the city center cost around 3-5 yuan per person. Stations and exits may be affected due to temporary access controls.
Step 5: Reach the Forbidden City by public bus
Several bus routes in Beijing serve the Tiananmen East and Tiananmen West areas. Depending on the direction and stop, routes commonly associated with these stops include buses 1, 2, 52, 82, and 120. Bus routes and stop arrangements may vary, especially around security-restricted areas.
The fare for a typical local bus ride can start at around 2 yuan, and fares are higher for longer distances or special services. After getting off the bus, walk north along the designated pedestrian path to the Meridian Gate.
Step 6: Taxis, ride-hailing and vehicle rentals
Taxis and app-based ride-hailing services are convenient for families, travelers with luggage, and visitors staying outside the central subway network. Didi is a widely used ride-hailing platform in China, while hotel reception staff can often help arrange transportation.
Starting from central Beijing, taxi fares can range from approximately 20-60 yuan, depending on distance, traffic, and route. Vehicles generally cannot drop passengers directly at the inner visitor entrance of the palace, as there are restrictions on access to the surrounding areas. Request a valid drop-off location near the Tiananmen exit and allow plenty of time to get through security.
Private cars with drivers can be arranged through hotels or licensed operators. A full-day car and driver rental for sightseeing can cost several hundred yuan or more, depending on the size of the car, itinerary, and included services. International tourists considering renting a car themselves should note that China generally does not recognize a regular foreign driver's license or international driving permit for driving; the necessary Chinese driving authorization must be obtained before driving.
Getting to Beijing by train or long-distance bus
Tourists already in China can use the country's extensive rail network to reach Beijing. Major stations include Beijing Railway Station, Beijing South Railway Station, Beijing West Railway Station, and Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station. High-speed train services connect Beijing to cities such as Shanghai, Tianjin, Xi'an, and many other destinations. To reach the Forbidden City from the arrival station, use the Beijing subway network or a licensed taxi.
Long-distance buses also connect Beijing to selected regional destinations, but rail services are generally more convenient for major intercity journeys. There is no easy direct tourist train or bus service from Dhaka to Beijing; international travel by land requires complex border, visa, and transportation arrangements and is not a recommended option for most visitors.
