On January 29, 1947, Mahatma Gandhi reached the village of Jayag on a tour to eliminate communal sentiments.
And on that day, Hemant Kumar Ghosh, the first barrister of Noakhali district, established the Ambika Kaliganga Charitable Trust and Gandhi Ashram with the purpose of propagating Gandhiji's ideals and preserving his memory. In 1975, the name of the trust was changed to Gandhi Ashram Trust.
